[Deon accepts the cloth and dabs at the blood on his face. The praise is nice - he's glad that he's doing well, and he's trying, damn it but he's trying, and he'd felt like he'd failed.

When the glasses come back, he takes them, examines the wire, and puts them back on with a small smile.

Then:]

He said that one of us kidnapped him and tortured him...for you. That doesn't sound right.

[There's an unspoken "it's not true, right?" He'd promised accountability, so he has to ask.]

I told him to talk to you, to ask you, but all he wanted was for me to bring him here. I wasn't going to do that. There was no way that I was going to do that. I told him how to talk to you, but he wouldn't listen to me. He only wanted to talk to you in person, and I didn't trust that.

[Maya. He knows her, in passing - that orca mermaid. She'd always seemed nice enough, but if she's a Fog follower, that changes the calculus. If Dandy is in league with her, so closely tied up with an agent of their rival power...

He thinks of Vincent, and how he wanted to destroy Deon's "son" because Chappie was something that he refused to understand just because he went against Vincent's interpretation of his religion. Deon had told Dandy that people were responsible for their own actions, not their god's, and he still believes that to be true. If Elias had demanded Dandy be tortured...it would be on the torturer's head, because he could have refused, but it would also be on Elias' head, too. He doesn't want that to be true. He wants Elias to be better than that.

He wants - in his heart of hearts, so deeply he won't admit it to himself - he wants Elias to be just like his "son".]
